Weightlifting Women: India’s First Gold at Commonwealth Games

Indian women are once again making us proud in the international sports scene. On the opening day of the Commonwealth Games 2014, weightlifter Sanjita Chanu won India’s first ever gold medal. She lifted a total of 173 kg—just 2 kg less than the Games’ highest record.

As if gold wasn’t good enough, S Mirabai Chanu made sure to secure the silver medal too.

While any medal in a global competition is a feat, our girls made it look easy. According to NDTV:

The contest was all but over at the halfway snatch stage with 20-year-old Sanjita and 19-year-old Mirabai lifting 77kg and 75kg. It was basically a contest between the two Manipuri lifters in an event which India had dominated for long in the Commonwealth Games from the days of Kunjarani Devi.
